Around Oconee: Computer-savvy seniors
The Oconee County Senior Center is offering a free computer class on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Oconee Veterans Park center for county seniors age 60 and older.
The class is individualized according to the student's needs and existing computer knowledge. Contact Tricia Smith at (706) 769-3979 for further information and to register.
Fun day on the way
The Athens Area Association of Realtors is hosting its third annual Family Fun Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 19 at the association's office, 1720 Meriweather Drive, Bogart, near the Jennings Mill subdivision entrance.
The free-admission event, which is designed to raise money for the Georgia Firefighters Burn Foundation, will have activities and games for kids of all ages. Local fire and police departments will have department vehicles and personnel on hand. The Burn Foundation will offer free rides in a mini-fire truck.
Events from the past two years have raised about $14,000 for the Burn Foundation.
Census in the works
Oconee County Planning Director B.R. White reported at an August commissioners' meeting that the county has partnered with the U.S. Census Bureau for the 2010 Decennial Census, according to the meeting's minutes.
White said the county plans to create a Complete Count Committee composed of local representatives.
Registration for tennis benefit ends Friday
The Athens Area Association of Realtors is holding a tennis tournament to benefit the Georgia Firefighters Burn Foundation on Sept. 14 at Jennings Mill Country Club in Bogart.
The tournament will be a team round-robin format, and spots are limited to 40 players available on a first-come, first-served basis.
The cost per player is $40 and includes a T-shirt, snacks and tournament play. Registration will begin at 5:30 p.m., and match play will begin at 6 p.m. The registration deadline is Friday. Forms may be found at www.RealtorsAthens.com or by calling (706) 353-1126.
This Hope concert set for Mars Hill
Mars Hill Baptist Church will host the group This Hope in concert at 6:30 p.m. Sunday.
This Hope is a group of five men who have a ministry through song. According to its Web site, the group formed in Soldotna, Alaska, moved to Georgia in 1997 and now is based in Woodstock near Atlanta. This Hope tours throughout the country.

Stroll to focus on South Main Street
Watkinsville's mayor will lead a walk through the city starting at 9 a.m. Saturday as part of the "Saturday Strolls" series scheduled through October.
Jim Luken will take participants along South Main Street to look at the historic structures in the area. A graduate of the University of Cincinnati, he retired from the Marine Corps as a colonel and later was vice president of Arko Inc., a firm that provides security for American embassies and consulates in Europe, South America and the Middle East.
The fee is $5 per person, and money will be donated to the Oconee Cultural Arts Foundation. Participants should meet in front of the Oconee County Courthouse.
Resource group needs help providing fans
Three dozen seniors in the Oconee Area Resource Council's Grocery Bag Program are suffering from the heat. A $20 donation will help provide a box fan for each senior. Send donations to OARC, P.O. Box 149, Watkinsville, GA 30677.
Waffle House, senior center host breakfast
Waffle House and the Oconee County Senior Center are sponsoring a breakfast from 8 to 10 a.m. Thursday at the center in Oconee Veterans Park.
